“Shabnam was an amazing tutor. My daughter really enjoyed her lesson. We will work with her again.”

— RMT parent (tutor: Shabnam S.)

“My child has been having class with Meiram. He's extremely patient. He focuses on the thinking process a lot. After a few classes I can see a change in how my child approaches problems. She doesn't give up easily and believes that she can solve the problems on her own. ”

— RMT parent (tutor: Meiram Z.)

“Zura prepared me for my retake exam of calculus, numerical methods and robotics. I have never been more confident going into an exam hall. He knew exactly what to cover and how much time was required for each topic. Excellent ways of explaining math/physics, simply and understandably. I would recommend him to all engineering students.”

— Nikusha Gogorihvili (tutor: Zurab J.)

Why Our IB Math Tutoring Works

  • 1-on-1 Socratic-method tutoring — students master IB Math content — AA or AI, SL or HL — and practice real paper-style questions
  • IA & exam prep — support for the Internal Assessment plus timed practice on Paper 1, 2, and (HL) Paper 3
  • Online or in-person — 1-on-1 online, in-person at our San Jose center, or in-home with selected tutors

Live Video. Real Whiteboard. No Typing.

Most online IB Math programs are group sessions with typed chat — slow, clunky, and disconnected. We use 1-on-1 live video with an interactive whiteboard:

  • →See your tutor explain problems in real time
  • →Walk through real IB paper questions step by step
  • →Ask questions immediately — no chat lag
  • →Watch BYOM-trained tutors explain the math behind every IB topic — especially useful for the depth HL demands

IB Math Prep — 4 Phases to Your Target Grade

Our IB Math prep is a four-phase program covering both IB Diploma Math courses: Analysis & Approaches (AA) and Applications & Interpretation (AI), at both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL). Every student starts with a diagnostic on their current scheme, then your tutor builds a plan tailored to AA vs AI, SL vs HL, and your target grade.

All IB Math courses share five content areas: Number & Algebra, Functions, Geometry & Trigonometry, Statistics & Probability, and Calculus. HL students cover each in greater depth and sit a third paper (Paper 3) with extended problem-solving.

Phase 1 · Algebra & Functions (SL/HL core)

  • Unit 1 · Number & Algebra (10 lessons)

Sequences and series (arithmetic, geometric). Exponents and logarithms. Binomial theorem. (HL) Mathematical induction, complex numbers, proofs.

  • Unit 2 · Functions (10 lessons)

Linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, rational, polynomial functions. Transformations. Inverses and compositions. (HL) Rational functions with higher-degree denominators, piecewise functions.

Phase 2 · Calculus (SL/HL)

  • Unit 3 · Differential Calculus (10 lessons)

Derivatives and differentiation rules. Related rates and optimization. (HL) Implicit differentiation, L’Hôpital’s rule, derivatives of inverse trig.

  • Unit 4 · Integral Calculus (10 lessons)

Antiderivatives and definite integrals. Areas and volumes of revolution. (HL) Integration by parts, partial fractions, differential equations.

Phase 3 · Statistics & Probability (SL/HL)

  • Unit 5 · Geometry & Trigonometry (10 lessons)

Right-triangle and non-right triangle trig (law of sines, law of cosines). Trig functions, identities, equations. (HL) Vectors in 3D, lines and planes in space.

  • Unit 6 · Statistics & Probability (10 lessons)

Descriptive statistics. Probability rules. Binomial and normal distributions. Conditional probability. (HL) Discrete and continuous random variables, moment generating.

Phase 4 · Internal Assessment + Exam Prep

  • Unit 7 · Internal Assessment (IA) Mathematical Exploration (6 lessons)

Choosing a topic suited to your level. Research, modeling, and mathematical processes. Writing against the IB’s five IA criteria. Drafts and revisions with your tutor.

  • Unit 8 · Paper 1, 2, (and HL Paper 3) Practice (8 lessons)

Timed practice on past IB papers. Calculator (Paper 2) vs non-calculator (Paper 1) strategies. (HL) Paper 3 extended problem-solving under real conditions.

IB Diploma Math Courses & Content Areas

The IB Diploma offers two Math courses, each at SL and HL:

  • Analysis & Approaches (AA) — traditional math track, emphasis on algebra, proof, and calculus; preferred by students heading into math-intensive university programs
  • Applications & Interpretation (AI) — applied math track, emphasis on modeling, statistics, and GDC use; suited for social sciences, humanities, and applied STEM
  • SL vs HL — HL goes deeper on each topic and adds a third exam paper (Paper 3) with extended problem-solving

Your tutor will tailor the program to your specific course (AA-SL, AA-HL, AI-SL, or AI-HL) and your target grade (3–7). A full two-year program typically runs across 60–80 lessons; targeted exam prep is possible in 20–30 lessons.

About RMT IB Math Prep

What it is

IB Math prep covers both IB Diploma Math courses — Analysis & Approaches (AA) and Applications & Interpretation (AI) — at both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL).

We cover all five content areas: Number & Algebra, Functions, Geometry & Trigonometry, Statistics & Probability, and Calculus — and support the Internal Assessment (IA) Mathematical Exploration along the way.

Why RMT for IB Math

IB Math HL is one of the most demanding secondary-school math courses in the world. It rewards deep understanding and penalizes surface-level pattern matching — which is exactly what BYOM-trained tutors are built for.

Our tutors are comfortable with the proof-based, derive-everything style the IB expects on HL Paper 3 extended-response questions — and equally good at the modeling and GDC fluency AI requires.

How lessons work

Sessions are 1-on-1 or small-group (2–4 students) over live video with an interactive whiteboard — so your tutor can walk through IB paper questions step by step and see where your student’s reasoning is breaking down. Prefer in person? Families in the South Bay can join in-person classes at our San Jose Bernal Road center, and selected tutors across the country also offer in-home sessions at their own locations — check each tutor’s profile for availability.

Standard pacing is 2 lessons per week across the two-year Diploma program. Targeted exam-prep crunches (20–30 lessons over 2–3 months before IB exams) are also common.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which IB Math course is my student taking: AA or AI?

AA (Analysis & Approaches) is the traditional algebra-and-calculus track, preferred by math-intensive university programs. AI (Applications & Interpretation) is the modeling-and-statistics track, suited for social sciences and applied fields. Your school assigns the course — our tutors support both, at both SL and HL.

Can you help with the Internal Assessment (IA)?

Yes. The IA Mathematical Exploration is 20% of the final mark. We help with topic selection, modeling, drafts, and writing against the five IB IA criteria. We do not write the IA for the student — that would violate IB academic honesty policy.

When should we start IB Math tutoring?

Ideally at the start of Year 1 of the Diploma — that gives two full years to build depth. Students who come to us later (even in the final months before exams) still see significant gains from targeted IB paper practice.
