I can clearly remember the time before the coming of online MOOCs and free or paid online courses. Participants in Remote Learning (or Distance Learning) courses had to sign up via mail and send proof of payment of their deposit or course fees. They then promptly received their assignment schedule - with due dates and point weightings. To a large extent, students were all alone. It was demanding to find internal motivation to complete their coursework. K-12 students were largely cut off from this kind of study. University students were more likely to complete and excel at this kind of course. Thus it was marketed. Tutoring services were arranged by the relevant university for groups at communal locations. Tutorials or group-think sessions could be sometimes hosted. Students could perform graded group work or attend lectures in person. Upon demand, students could also buy notes and summaries or hire their own personal tutors.
What changes the face of Remote Learning?
During and after the COVID-19 pandemic, lockdowns complicated the situation. New logistics surrounded the delivery of normal school courses. Class sizes were limited, and schools had compulsory sanitization sessions. Teachers had to organize logistics around hybrid classes. This was the turning point, and record numbers of parents decided to start homeschooling. Some were challenged to see if they could do it. Others decided to do it indefinitely. Others realized schooling their own children was tough. But working remotely and schooling together is a unique administrative nightmare. Those chose to send their children back to school ASAP once the gates opened again.
